CRIME NEWS

  • On Saturday morning at 2:30 a.m., police responded to shots fired at an apartment on 900A Masters Lane that injured a 7-year-old boy—taken to a hospital—and a 12-year-old boy who was treated at the scene as local residents said they were startled by the noise.  WITN

EDUCATION NEWS

  • ECU held Research and Creative Achievement Week from March 30th to April 4th where over 400 participants presented projects in fields from biomedical sciences to the humanities. The event showcased work such as machine learning research to predict breast cancer recurrence and a community project linking local culture to economic development — it also marked ECU’s designation as an R1 institution.  East Carolina University
  • Wellcome Middle School celebrated the first Pitt County Schools educator to be named North Carolina Teacher of the Year this week — she received a champion’s welcome for her achievement.  The Daily Reflector

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • At Pitt-Greenville Airport, first responders practiced helping in a plane crash by tending to volunteers who acted out being hurt or even dead. PGV Executive Director Bill Hopper said the FAA requires the drill every three years and the exercise comes after a March 14 plane crash that killed a dentist and his wife.  WITN
  • The North Carolina Ferry Division hired 18 new workers to get ready for a busy summer and will keep accepting applications all year. The division will cover training costs for select employees to earn a U.S. Coast Guard license — a step that can help them get promoted into higher roles.  WITN
  • A planning and needs assessment suggests that Pitt County will construct five new facilities to replace the county office building and other administrative facilities—at an estimated cost of $92 million.  The Daily Reflector

  • ECU physical therapy doctoral student Ankur Padhye is testing carbon-fiber shoes in his Greenville lab to learn how they change foot movements and may lower injury risks.
