CRIME NEWS

  • Greenville police are working with the FBI to search for a 21-year-old man charged with murder—federal warrants were issued after a Feb. 1 homicide on Colonial Avenue, as authorities continue to investigate the case.  The Daily Reflector
  • Greenville police and the FBI are looking for 21-year-old Jaiquez Ebron, the main suspect in the murder of 24-year-old Traeon Williams who was shot on February 1 in the 1100 block of Colonial Avenue; officials said he may be in Memphis.  WITN

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Greenville Museum of Art is hosting its 52nd Annual Art Ball at the Hilton Greenville on Saturday, April 26 — a gala featuring fine dining, dancing, live auctions, and more. Proceeds from the event will support the museum’s educational programs and art exhibits.  WITN

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Trillium Health Resources signed an agreement with Hyde County Schools and Southeastern Integrated Care to offer mental health services to students ages 5 to 18 at school sites and via telehealth if needed — therapists will meet with students in private after receiving parental permission and tailor care based on clinical assessments.  WNCT
  • During ECU's spring break, 39 faculty and staff took a two-day bus tour—covering six counties—to meet local leaders and assess community needs and assets. They aim to form partnerships that will guide research and service efforts across the region.  East Carolina University
  • At ECU's Brody School of Medicine, Dr. Morgan Milton studies Vibrio bacteria in coastal waters to understand how these germs form biofilms—research that could lead to better drug therapies and fewer food poisoning cases. She partnered with Dr. John Markantonis to test local samples from ECU Health—while also mentoring students in her biochemistry class.  East Carolina University

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The North Carolina General Assembly passed House Bill 302 on Apr. 1 with a vote of 70 to 47 to require candidates for Pitt County Board of Education seats to declare their party and hold primaries if needed. The bill—currently awaiting Senate approval—will take effect Dec. 1 if approved and will also apply to school board elections in many other counties.  WNCT
  • Pitt County departments Engineering, Permitting, MIS, and Planning & Development will launch the new Enterprise Permitting & Licensing Portal in late April — the online system will let contractors, developers, and homeowners apply for septic, well, and building permits, site plans, erosion control, and stormwater permits and make online payments.  Pitt County

HEALTH NEWS

  • Child life specialists help children in the clinic cope with treatments by using play to ease pain and fear—retired specialist Jacque Sauls helped build the degree program that set the field in motion. The number of certified specialists has grown as they continue to support young patients and prepare them for the transition to adult care.  East Carolina University
