ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ A brush fire destroyed a doublewide mobile home and nearby barns on Benjamin Road yesterday, leaving a Pitt County family homeless; firefighters using hoses and helicopters contained the blaze before 3 p.m., and the daughters escaped safely after receiving a text alert. WITN
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The City of Greenville is sponsoring a summer boot camp for teens interested in construction to help solve a shortage of skilled workers. The program will run this summer (local opportunity) and offers hands-on training. The Daily Reflector
- ➤ ECU held the Excels event in January at its Main Campus Student Center where over 2,700 freshmen and transfer students with a 3.0+ GPA were recognized alongside nearly 225 mentors awarded Success Champion pins. The program, launched in 2010, honors academic achievement and supports student growth. East Carolina University
- ➤ East Carolina University will rename its new facility the Brody Center for Medical Education after a 10 million donation from the Brody family to expand scholarships. ECU will increase its class size to 120 and upgrade labs as the center prepares to open for the 2027 academic year. Public Radio East
- ➤ Jeanann Duncan at North Pitt High School was named the Pitt County Schools Teacher of the Year at an award banquet held today; she teaches economics and personal finance and has nine years of experience. WITN
- ➤ BF Grady Elementary teacher Amy Bostic has been named Teacher of the Week based on community nominations. With 17 years in education, she guides her 5th graders in creative, hands-on learning + cares for their class pet. WITN
- ➤ East Carolina University will hold police training and alert testing during spring break on its campus to prepare the local police for emergencies. The exercise is scheduled for early spring break and aims to boost response readiness. WITN
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Greenville and Rocky Mount, along with nearby neighbors like New Bern, Jacksonville, and Pine Knoll Shores, earned the 2025 Tree City USA honor while East Carolina University became a Tree Campus. Award winners will plant trees on Arbor Day Friday (per Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler). Public Radio East
