- ➤ Habitat for Humanity is using an all-women crew to build an affordable home in Greenville — a project that will continue over the coming weeks and support local families. WITN
- ➤ Pitt County Animal Services cut adoption fees in half starting Wednesday for cats and dogs over one year old, charging $48 and $68 and including spaying, neutering, vaccinations, and microchipping. The shelter (located on County Home Road in Greenville) is caring for 86 dogs and 34 cats. WITN
ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ The state recorded 27 fire deaths in 20 counties as of Feb. 17, including fatal incidents in Beaufort, Bertie, Duplin, and Pitt — a trend that has officials urging residents to test smoke alarms and practice fire safety measures. WITN

- ➤ East Carolina University will host the Pan African Conference & Black History celebration from Feb. 27-28 and March 1 featuring music performances, storytelling, intellectual discussions and fashion shows. Students and faculty organized the event with registration available via the flyer. WITN

- ➤ East Carolina University College of Education is hosting Aging Smart with A.I. for older adults to learn how to use artificial intelligence in daily life. The event takes place Wednesday, Mar. 4 at the Willis Building Auditorium and costs $35 for non-members and $15 for members (sign up by Friday). WITN
- ➤ Kylie Gilroy, a math teacher at John Paul II Catholic (assistant athletic director), is named Teacher of the Week after nominations recognized her strong commitment to mentoring students in Greenville. - ➤ East Carolina University has named Dr. Sharon Paynter as its new Senior Vice Provost for Research and Innovation effective immediately; Paynter, a native North Carolinian with extensive leadership roles at ECU (including Interim Chief Research Officer and Acting Chief Research and Engagement Officer), brings a proven track record in expanding research funding.
